MACROS Education

Protein, carbs, and fats. These are called Macronutrients or Macros for short. We need them all. Protein helps us grow lean muscle tissue which results in fat loss and higher metabolisms. Protein also helps with the body to produce the hormones we need for every day processes. Not to mention protein is a part of our DNA. So ya... protein is just a “little” important. Some good sources of protein can be found in meats, dairy products, and whole grain carb sources like quinoa.

Carbs give us energy! It is our fuel, but not all carbs have the same effect on the body. Carbs high in sugar can definitely fuel us, but only for a short amount of time. Whole grain carbs such as whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, and whole oats will continue your energy longer because the insulin is being processed at a steady rate.

Fats play a vital role in your nutrition and health by helping you absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Some examples of healthy fats are olive oil, avocado, and omega-3 oils.

So here is the secret... you can eat it all, unless you have certain food restrictions determined by your body’s reaction to that food. If you want to consistently hit your goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle, yes it is going to take work and discipline.

Don’t let yourself get hangry. There is a difference between restricting yourself and having discipline. Restricting might lead to eating disorders while discipline can mean, “okay I am going to substitute plain greek yogurt for my sour cream since I had the peanut butter cookie earlier.” It’s about eating enough so that your body can recover from the lifting time you’ve been putting in at the gym.

I enjoy food which is a part of why life is so great. Never restrict yourself. Just keep searching for the foods that make your body feel good, give you a ton of energy, and help you hit your goals!
